This often attributed to Abe being the middle child of a sibling group of three. In 2243, Winters was admitted into Starfleet Academy with a lot of confidence and often bordering arrogance. On occasion this would rub the instructors and peers the wrong way, but for the most part he delivered results. Though it's been known not to always workout in his favor. The Cadet quickly gravitated towards security and tactical studies. He excelled in close quarters combat, threat assessment and command decisions under pressure. During his time in the Academy, Abe found himself in several romantic relationships that earned him a reputation of being intense off and on duty. By graduation, he earned a reputation for someone you wanted to have your back, even if you didn't always like him. Ensign Winters first assignment was on the USS Hawking as a security officer. This put him in multiple interactions with the Orion Syndicate and other anti-pirate operations. These experiences helped hone his instincts and sharpen his tactical awareness. Promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade in 2249, Winters was transferred to the USS Nelson. His time aboard was extremely brief, but it would be considered a defining moment in his career. In 2250, the Nelson was destroyed during a Klingon attack. Completely outgunned and overwhelmed, the ship was lost along with most of the crew. Abraham was among only a handful of survivors. The loss of the Nelson left Winters psychologically scarred in many ways. The Lieutenant had been on the ship for over a month when the attack happened, leaving him with an intense level of survivor's guilt. Anger became the primary emotional state, accompanied by thoughts of revenge against the Klingons responsible. Following the incident, Winters received a transfer to Starbase 14, where he served from 2250 to 2254 as security officer. Being assigned to Starbase helped to provide stability while undergoing counseling. In this role, he found himself responsible for handling diplomatic security and overseeing station security rotations. Eventually, Winters requested a transfer back to a ship assignment, due to feeling that he needed more experience if he was to reach his career goals. In 2254, he was transferred to the USS Valiant as Assistant Chief Security Officer. Initially serving as a Lieutenant Junior Grade, Winters found himself promoted a full Lieutenant in 2257. The Valiant was assigned near the Klingon border. The crew and he found themselves participating in convoy escort duties and border patrol operations. Winters even earned an accommodation when a group of Klingons boarded the vessel. On the Valiant, he began an on-and-off again relationship with Chief Medical Officer. Needless to say, it was intense and emotionally volatile at times. Though it never affected his duties, Abraham recognized that he needed to return to counseling. By 2259, Abraham was transferred to USS Proteus as Chief Security Officer. This assignment was given to him for confidence, command readiness, and command presence. Lieutenant Winters was still dealing with some unresolved trauma that he continued to address in therapy once a month or additionally as needed. Over the next three years, Winters and the crew of the Proteus were involved in a deep space expedition. During this time, he got to work as the duty officer on third shift. This allowed him to pick up some minor command experience. Upon returning to Earth after such a long time away. Abraham believed that he needed to change the pace of his career up a bit and also missed being around family. It was during this time that Starfleet Academy was recruiting experienced officers who had experience in deep space. In order to help train up-and-coming officers and assist in preparing them for space duty. Accepting a position as a Security Instructor and a promotion to Lt. Commander. During the last five years, Winters has enjoyed his time teaching at the Academy. Spending time with family and in 2265, married Nurse Janice Blanton after dating for two years. But deep down, there was this urge inside of him to return to the stars, especially when hearing back from former students sharing their own experiences. Placing a request for a security chief position, it didn't take long for Abraham receive a position on the USS Veritas. |
